Jaime Munguia on Gennady Golovkin: I was ready in 2018, even more now

Super-welterweight world title holder Jaime Munguia is open to a massive fight with Gennady Golovkin this year after missing out in 2018.

Munguia was put forward as a potential option to face Golovkin after Canelo Alvarez was handed a suspension for a positive drugs test.

The California commission rejected the talented Mexican at the time. Munguia has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Golovkin eventually dispatched of Vanes Martirosyan with ease.

Preparing to defend his WBO belt against mandatory challenger Dennis Hogan this weekend, Munguia still has unfinished business with ‘GGG’ to conclude.

“We would be interested in that fight with GGG now that he is on DAZN. The truth is it would be a good fight for us and for the people,” said Munguia.

“One year ago it couldn’t happen. But now obviously it’s a possibility. If a year ago I felt ready, now I feel even more ready.

“So with pleasure we would accept the fight. Right now I’m focused on the fight that I have on April 13th. But after that with pleasure we would take this fight.”

On moving up in weight, Munguia added: “I do have plans to move up to 160 pounds. Maybe next year or for the next fight or maybe by the end of the year.

“The truth is we are still saying that I feel good, and I feel good making 154 for this fight that I have on April 13th. But we are considering a move up to 160.

“You have seen I’m big for 154 pounds. It does take some work to do it. But I’ve figured it out pretty well and gotten used to it, but it’s inevitable.

“I don’t know if it’s going to be for my next fight or by the end of the year, but I will be moving to 160 pounds,” concluded Munguia.

ALCAZAR

Trainer Robert Alcazar, once in the corner of Munguia’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya, chipped in on 160: “There are plans. There are plans to have this fight, but first we have to go through this fight.

“There are future fights. It will be one of those future fights. Of course, you would like to have the biggest fights out there. If GGG is the next fight, then it’s the next fight.

“But my part is to have Munguia ready so that when the promoter calls and asks him to fight somebody that he is ready to take on any challenge that the promoter decides is best for him.

“But right now he’s focused on the task he has ahead of him. After that, we’ll think in the future about fights, but whatever names you mentioned, no doubt he can fight them.”
