Errol Spence Jr. proved far too strong for Mikey Garcia on Saturday night as the IBF welterweight ruler secured his place among the world’s elite.
‘The Truth’ fended off the almost non-existent challenge of Garcia, who moved up a step too far from the lightweight limit.
A champion in four weight classes, Garcia had nothing to give after bulking up far too much for the Spence challenge.
As Spence contemplates a massive clash at his own weight, Garcia is left to ponder his future.
A run at super-lightweight could be considered, although a fight with Vasyl Lomachenko should be the short-term goal.
Making a defense of his WBC title at 135, potentially against Luke Campell, would be a good choice later in the year. But only once Garcia has digested his first loss.
Mikey took a hell of a beating against a far bigger man and could well have been saved from round nine onwards.
Easing himself back in seems the order of the day. Before Garcia can eventually face Campbell and Lomachenko in the future.
