Ex-heavyweight champion Frank Bruno recovering from pneumonia

Frank Bruno’s agent Dave Davies has confirmed the former WBC heavyweight champion was recently treated in hospital after suffering from pneumonia.

The 57 year-old, who shared the ring with Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson during his career, received care from doctors before beginning his recovery.

In a statement, Davies said: “I’m here just to advise as we are getting calls. Frank has contracted pneumonia. We must say a big thank you to the staff of The Horton General hospital, in Banbury who have treated him. He now needs a few weeks rest.”

Just last week, Bruno was spotted ringside at The O2 Arena. Bruno had been taking in the James DeGale v Chris Eubank Jr. match-up on ITV Box Office.

Chatting ringside to the likes of Prince Naseem Hamed and YouTube star KSI, Bruno was in high spirits.

A British legend in his own right, Bruno retired in 1996 after suffering his second loss to Tyson. Previously, Bruno had fought unsuccessfully for the top division crown on three occasions before overcoming Oliver McCall at Wembley Stadium in his penultimate bout.

Leaving boxing with a 40-5 record, Bruno remains a much-loved figure on UK shores and beyond.

Since retirement, it’s been well-documented that Bruno suffered from depression. The Londoner is now an advocate for mental health issues.

In an interview with WBN, Bruno had hopes his life would one day be turned into a movie.

“Many people have approached my agent and myself about doing a movie. But I’ve just lived my life and got on with it,” Bruno exclusively told World Boxing News in 2016.

“I have thought people find it interesting. And obviously me going from being a builder’s mate to a world champion boxer is a story in itself.

“Then there’s also been the mental health issues. Moving from a boxer to an entertainer. And of course, many of the great characters that have been stepping stones in my story make it quite a good one to tell. Put it all together and you have Frank Bruno: The Movie!”

IDRIS ELBA

And who does Bruno hope will portray him?

“Well the public tell me that Idris Elba would be a good choice. I liked Will Smith in Ali, but I am sure there is someone out there who can play me. However, they’ll need to learn the mannerisms, and of course, the laugh,” he joked.
