Mayweather may have changed his mind on Pacquiao II

Floyd Mayweather seems to have broken his promise to Manny Pacquiao by reiterating his desire to retire from boxing.

On the back of an easy victory over Tenshin Nasukawa on New Year’s Eve, Mayweather did not mention a planned rematch with Pacquiao.

This is despite the pair agreeing to meet when bumping into each other a few months prior by total accident.

“I’m retired. I’m just having a little fun entertaining my fans. But I’m still going to pick up that bag (of cash) and have a little fun for nine minutes,” said Mayweather.

Just before defeated Tenshin at the Saitama Super Arena, Mayweather’s need to earn big bucks remained evident.

This may give hope to those wishing to see Pacquiao given a second chance at the ‘Money’ man after fighting injured in 2015.

“What if I told you I was making $9,000,000 for nine minutes of sparring in Tokyo, Japan? Would you do the same if you were me? I like to call it a nine-minute walkthrough,” he said.

Pacquiao was hopeful a deal could be made when addressing the situation on the back of signing a deal with Mayweather’s right-hand man Al Haymon.

It’s thought a win over Adrien Broner later this month would be enough to tempt Mayweather to fight for the 51st time professionally.

“Floyd is fighting in December. After that and my fight, we’ll see what happens,” said Pacquiao of a return.

PACQUIAO vs BRONER

A three-time Fighter of the Year and the Boxing Writers Association of America’s reigning Fighter of the Decade. Pacquiao (60-7-2, 39 KOs) hails from Sarangani Province in the Philippines. He is the only sitting Congressman and Senator to win a world title.

After serving two terms as Congressman, Pacquiao was elected to a Philippine Senate seat in May 2016, capturing over 16 million votes nationally.

Pacquiao’s boxing resume features victories over at least seven current and future Hall of Famers. Including Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley, and Juan Manuel Marquez.

In his last fight, with Philippine President Rodrigo R. Duerte and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad in attendance, Pacquaio, 39, regained the welterweight title for a fourth time with a vintage performance on July 15 at Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Pacquiao knocked out defending WBA champion Lucas Matthyssee in the seventh round.

Cincinnati’s Broner (33-3-1, 24 KOs) is a former four-division world title-holder. He’s one of boxing’s most popular and colorful personalities.

The brash and outspoken 29-year-old has faced some of boxing’s best en route to winning titles at 130, 135, 140, and 147 pounds, including Mikey Garcia, Paulie Malignaggi, and Shawn Porter.

Broner will face his 10th world champion in Pacquiao. In April, ‘ ‘The Problem’ scored a draw in his last fight on SHOWTIME against former two-division world champion Jessie Vargas.
