EXCLUSIVE: Charlie Edwards gives assessement of ‘SuperFly’ division

Edwards gave his assessment of the 115 division as the Briton continues his pursuit of another shot at the big time.

“Super Flyweight is a great division, as I’ve said in previous interviews I do feel that Kal Yafai is the weakest world champion so that’s why I’ve been gunning for him,” Edwards exclusively told World Boxing News.

It is common knowledge Edwards wants the huge domestic clash with WBA Champion Yafai and he will continue to push for the fight.

“Obviously I’m in the top 15 now with a WBA ranking, I just thought why not if I can do it – it’s a perfect move.

“It’s a big, big achievement and it’s a world title so if I know I can do it and it’s worth the sacrifice and everything, then I’ll do it.”

When asked if other champions at the 115 weight are choices for him, Edwards responded: “At the end of the day I will fight anyone and I think I’ve shown that in my career to date.”

“I want the big fights, records are for DJs – if you’re fighting for a world title and you get beat, so what – you’re fighting the best in the world.”

Edwards had his first world title shot in 2016 against a more experienced John Riel Casimero which resulted in Edward’s maiden loss as a pro. Showing he’s learning from the encounter, he said: “If the challenge is there; any challenge I’m going to jump to and rise to and I’ll have full confidence in being able to beat them.

“I’ve learnt from the fight with Casimero that it is about timing and this sport is about being clever.

“I was very naive back in the day, it’s not just about the sport, you need to make your money as well – you’re not in this game forever.

“You want to get as much as you can when you can so when an opportunity arises and it’s the right one I’m going to jump straight at it, if it’s the wrong one then I won’t.”

Srisaket Sor Rungvisai is currently the top dog of the Super Flyweight division after two solid wins against Roman Gonzalez shot him into the P4P rankings.

“I do rate him, he’s very ruthless and comes from nothing, there’s a kill or be killed mentality about him. He’s so strong and so tough and he’s a great competitor in the super flyweight division.

“I do think Roman Gonzalez has had a lot of wars and he’s 31, he’s not the biggest for the weight because it was another jump up.

“Sometimes jumping up too much and the age it can change you overnight,” he concluded.
