Tribute paid to Bunny Grant following death at 78

A tribute has been paid to Bunny Grant who died at the age of 78. Commonwealth Hon. Secretary Simon Block:

THE LATE ‘BUNNY’ GRANT

I was very sorry to learn today of the passing of our former Lightweight Champion, George Leslie Grant, better known throughout the boxing world as ‘Bunny’, who was one of Jamaica’s most distinguished sporting heroes.

He was Jamaican national Champion at two weights, a Central American Lightwelterweight Champion, and famously defeated in 1962 one of Britain’s best, Dave Charnley, to win our Lightweight Title, a Title he held until 1967.

As well as Charnley, he shared a ring with some of the greatest fighters of that era including Eddie Perkins, Teo Cruz, Percy Hayles Carlos Hernandez and Clyde Gray, sometime winning, sometimes losing but always giving his best.

His era as our Champion spanned the change from the old ‘Empire’ Title to the more relevant ‘Commonwealth’ Title.

On behalf of our President, Chairman and all the Directors of the Commonwealth Boxing Council I extend to his family and friends our most sincere condolences.

May his brave soul rest in peace.
