The WBC released a full list of their mandatory obligations following the recent Convention in Kiev.
Top of the agenda was the situation regarding a rematch between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez. Since then, Alvarez has been announced as moving to fight Rocky Fielding at 168 pounds, leaving the first order of business obsolete for the time being.
Here’s a full list on what transpired:
Former World Boxing Council middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin won’t be fighting a direct rematch with new Champion Saúl “Canelo” Alvarez.
Instead, GGG will fight Interim Champion Jermall Charlo and the winner of that encounter will fight Canelo. Provided that Canelo himself wins his voluntary defense (which has not happened).
In the heavyweight division, Dominic Breazeale will fight the winner of the contest between champion Deontay Wilder vs Tyson Fury. But if Wilder vs Joshua is arranged that supersedes this mandatory. Meanwhile, Silver champion Dillian’s Whyte’s claim will be reviewed.
Unified champion Oleksander Usyk, who won the Super Series, will fight Tony “Bomber” Bellew at the Manchester Arena on November 10th. Tony is a WBC Emeritus champion.
Light heavyweight champion Adonis “Superman” Stevenson has a mandatory vs Oleksandr Gvozdyk Quebec on December 1st. The winner will fight Badou Jack.
Super middleweight David Benavidez is champion in recess after testing positive for cocaine. WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman says: “We will work hand in hand with David to get him help.”
Anthony Dirrell is the mandatory contender. He will fight Avni Yildrim within this year. Diamond champion Callum Smith has just defeated George Groves in Jeddah, Saudia Arabia. Callum’s promoter Eddie Hearn says he’s earned his stripes.
Super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo has fought two fought two mandatories back to back. It’s Julian Williams vs Erislandy Lara to decide the mandatory contender.
New Welterweight champion Shawn Porter, who’s emerged as one of the stars at the Convention in Kiev, has just won the vacant crown.
He now faces two mandatories. He has thirty days of free negotiations with Keith Thurman. Andre Berto, who defeated Devon Alexander, is next in line.
Super lightweight champion is Jose Carlos Ramirez. There will be an elimination fight between Adrien Broner and Jorge Linares, provided they comply with the Code of Ethics.
Viktor Postol Vs Mohamed Mimoune in a semi final eliminator.
Mikey Garcia is lightweight champion while Luke Campbell is mandatory challenger. Javier Fortuna and Zaur Abdulaev will contest a semi-final.
Super featherweight champion Miguel “Alacran” Berchelt fights a mandatory against Miguel “Mickey” Roman on November 3rd in El Paso.
Featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr will defend against Diamond champion Leo Santa Cruz.
Super bantamweight champion Rey Vargas underwent shoulder surgery and developed pneumonia, needing recovery time. November 12th in Tokyo. Tomoki Kamada vs Cesar Juarez.
Vacant bantamweight title will be contested between Rau’shee Warren vs Nordine Oubaali
Two time Super flyweight champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai has one more voluntary defense, before a mandatory against Juan Francisco Estrada.
Flyweight champion Cristofer “Latigo” Rosales will fight the winner of a final eliminator of Lee Selby vs Julio Cesar Martinez.
Jonathan Taconing vs Hirotoshi Kyoguchi for the final eliminator to Light flyweight champion Ken Shiro.
Last, but not least, minimum weight champion Wanheng Menayothin, who’s extraordinary record is 51-0, has a voluntary defense. Simphiwe Knonco vs Tsubasa Koura for the final eliminator.
