Luis Nery welcomed back by WBC, handed Silver title shot

World Boxing News 22/09/2018

WBC

Ex-world title holder Luis Nery will begin the process of regaining his championship on October 6 when the Mexican returns to action.

The 23 year-old was handed a six-month suspension for failing to make weight for his rematch with Shinsuke Yamanaka after scaling three pounds over the limit of 118 pounds.

Nery won the contest via second round knockout to retire Yamanaka for good and preserve his unbeaten record.

Now 26-0, Nery gets back in the ring for WBC silver title shot at the same weight.

In a statement released on Friday, the WBC said: “Former WBC bantamweight champion, Luis Nery has fully complied with the WBC requirements as per the ruling issued by the WBC Board of Governors regarding his weight management problem, which led to him losing his world championship early this year.

“The WBC hereby confirms that Luis Nery suspension ended on September the 1st and is now eligible to compete for a WBC championship.

“The WBC Silver championship committee has approved Luis Nery to fight for the WBC bantamweight Silver title on October 6 against Jason Canoy.”

Part of the official WBC ruling states:

WBC World Title, which, in itself, constitutes a severe penalty

B. The WBC Board of Governors hereby suspends Mr. Nery from participating in

any WBC-sanctioned activities for 6 months from the date he failed to make weight or

through September 1, 2018.

C. Mr. Nery shall undertake a complete Mass Index examination given by a health

care provider approved by the WBC to confirm if he is suitable to compete in the

Bantamweight division.

D. The WBC Ratings Committee shall consider Mr. Nery for inclusion in the WBC’s

ratings for the month immediately following Mr. Nery`s comeback fight, based on his

pugilistic merits and record.

E. The WBC shall select a nutritionist who shall work with Mr. Nery to establish a

nutrition program and supervise Mr. Nery’s dietary regime at Mr. Nery’s own cost for a

period of six (6) months from the date of this ruling. Mr. Nery shall strictly follow the

WBC-selected nutritionist’s indications and recommendations.
