Matchroom Boxing USA and Murphys Boxing Promotions today announced a partnership with the Boston Bruins Foundation to raise funds for first responders across Massachusetts and New England.
The promoters are also providing special discounted individual and group tickets to military, police, fire and rescue personnel and their families for the World Championship night of boxing on October 20, 2018 at TD Garden.
The historic fight night – Boston’s biggest night of boxing ever – will feature three first responders battling for victory. Framingham firefighter Danny O’Connor (30-3) will clash with Tommy Coyle (24-4, 15 KOs) in a Super-Lightweight bout. O’Connor, the former New England and WBC Silver Jr Welterweight Champ, is at the forefront of the recent resurgence in Boston boxing. Former U.S. Marine and Afghanistan veteran Mark ‘Bazooka’ Deluca (21-1, 13 KOs), a Super-Welterweight from Whitman, Mass will fight a rematch against Walter Wright (17-4, 8 KOs) of Seattle in a 10-round bout for the NABA title that Wright took from Deluca in a controversial decision this past June. In addition to O’Connor and Deluca’s bouts, Niall Kennedy (11-0-1, 7 KOs), a police officer from Gorey, County Wexford, Ireland will face New Jersey’s Brendan Barrett (7-0-2, 5 KOs) in a six round undefeated showdown.
“We’re incredibly proud to offer first responders here in Boston the opportunity to come watch first-class World Championship boxing at the TD Garden, while also working with the fantastic team at the Bruins Foundation to help give back to veterans, police officers and firefighters,” said Ken Casey, founder of Murphys Boxing Promotions and the iconic Boston band The Dropkick Murphys. “This will be one of the greatest fight nights the City of Boston has ever seen. Honoring these heroes who keep our nation and our communities safe is a terrific and important component of the event.”
The fight also features a titanic main event with unbeaten WBO Middleweight Champion Billy-Joe Saunders of England facing unbeaten top contender Demetrius Andrade of Rhode Island. The October 20th fight night is part of the DAZN Network’s stacked fall lineup of combat sports. It is being produced by Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing USA in association with Ken Casey of Murphys Boxing Promotions.
“This is going to be an incredible night of boxing in Boston and we can’t wait for it,” said Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing USA. “The fact that we have first responders participating both in the ring and in the crowd makes this event even more exciting for us. We’re also thrilled to work with the Bruins Foundation to raise money for these brave men and women.”
Rounding out the stellar fight card are two of the most exciting fighters in women’s boxing battling for the consolidated IBF and WBA world Lightweight championship: Katie Taylor and Cindy Serrano. The big night also includes an IBF world Super-Featherweight championship bout between Tevin Farmer and James Tennyson; and an IBF world Featherweight title eliminator match featuring Kid Galahad and Toka Kahn Clary.
The Boston Bruins Foundation supports various First Responder charities through different events and initiatives throughout the season including the BFit First Responder Challenge and the BFit Heroes Cup Hockey Tournament. A portion of the proceeds raised will be donated to the 100 Club of Massachusetts, a charity that supports the families of law enforcement officers and firefighters who are killed in the line of duty.
The October 20th fight will also be available on DAZN, the world’s first pure sport streaming service that allows fans to watch their sport, their way, live or on-demand. After launching in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Japan and Canada over the last two years, DAZN will launch in the U.S. this September at $9.99 per month with more than 70 fight nights planned across Matchroom Boxing, Bellator MMA and the World Boxing Super Series. The platform, available on most connected devices including Smart TVs, smartphones, tablets and game consoles, offers a 1-month free trial and no long-term contract.
First responders and military personnel are encouraged to inquire about special reduced individual and group tickets for themselves and their families. For first responder information and tickets contact LMurphy@bostonbruins.com or Mbloom@murphysboxing.com.
