Amir Khan v Samuel Vargas – Results from Birmingham, England

Jason Welborn remains British middleweight champion following another razor-thin split decision over Tommy Langford.

In a domestic Fight of the Year contender, Welborn and Langford went to war for the 36 minutes and gave everything they had for the Birmingham crowd.

Langford was down twice in the early rounds and looked set to be taken out, but fought back bravely to dominate the middle sessions.

Welborn came on strong for the final two, and that proved the difference as the scorecards of 115-113, 114-113 and 113-114 to Langford displayed at the end.

Another enthralling encounter saw Scott Fitzgerald pull a rabbit out of his hat in the final round to avoid what could have been tense scorecards against Craig Morris.

Fitzgerald had to take as good as he got for the majority of the contest and may well have been one round down heading into the last session when he managed to catch Morris and force the referee to step in.

The 26 year-old super-welterweight could now face Anthony Fowler in a domestic barnstormer with both men holding perfect records.

Unknown Hassan Mwakinyo entered the lion’s den on Saturday night and earned a career-best win over a lacklustre Sam Eggington.

The 23 year-old, with two losses from 13 bouts, landed on Eggington’s chin at will as the home fighter just didn’t get into the contest.

Eggington was almost taken out at the end of round one, although with a mass of solid and flush shots hitting the target in the second – without response – Mwakinyo claimed a shock victory.

In the aftermath, Mwakinyo called out Kell Brook after defeating Egginton on just one week’s notice.

Forthcoming European lightweight title challenger Lewis Ritson warmed up for his return to Newcastle with a third round triumph over Oscar Amador.

Ritson proved too strong and will now face Francesco Patera in his hometown next month.

Gamal Yafai is now two victories into his comeback from defeat to Gavin McDonnell after halting Brayan Mairena in the seventh.

Yafai looked good before unleashing a huge fight-ending blow to stop Mairena in his tracks and improve to 16-1.

Sterner tests await the Birmingham man, brother of world champion Kal and amateur star Galal, who delighted the home crowd with another exciting performance.

In a surprisingly quick win, Ryan Kelly put Kelcie Ball to the sword early. Ball brought an undefeated 9-0 record to the table, although Kelly showed him little respect in that manner to gain a first round stunner.

Super-Bantamweight Osman Aslam can now boast a 13-0 C.V on the back of dropping and stopping Jack Summers in the third round, whilst Qais Ashfaq wasted no time dispatching of Gary Austin in the opening session.

Steven Donnelly opened proceedings by winning all four rounds against Miguel Aguilar to push his record to 2-0. The super-welterweight won every round to take the contest on points 40-36.

Sean McComb continued his progress by also claiming a second pro victory with a stoppage triumph over Lester Cantillano. McComb ended the fight impressively in the second round.

In a four-rounder, Shakan Pitters made it seven wins from seven with a knockout in two, whilst Kieron Conway won on points over four against Gino Kanters.
