Eddie Hearn: Everyone in boxing knows Tyson Fury won’t face Deontay Wilder in 2018

Despite promoter Frank Warren, Fury himself, and Wilder’s representatives all stating the WBC title bout is full steam ahead, Hearn is adamant there will be some delay until 2019.

Asked whether he sees Wilder v Fury happening this year, Hearn told Betting Pro:  “No, certainly not. I think he knows that, and everyone in boxing knows that unless he’s getting $20million for that fight.

“I don’t think he’ll take the fight against Wilder, to be honest with you. I know they’ve said it is happening, there’s no date or venue yet, and I think Fury needs one more. He knows that.

“He’s done unbelievably to come back from where he was, and he deserves a huge amount of credit, but he looked very poor in his last fight. He got booed out of the ring. He’s not an entertaining fighter to watch.

“He’s awkward and tricky, which is not great for people to watch, but it’s effective as we saw against (Wladimir) Klitschko, so I think if he can have a fight or two more, which was always his plan.

“He’s got a very good chance against the likes of Wilder and Joshua, but right now, he stands no chance. ‘I think he might have something up his sleeve, but I don’t see him getting in the ring this year with Wilder, for sure.”

Hearn’s comments come as the promoter closes in on another huge night at Wembley for his star operator in Anthony Joshua, who faces Alexander Povetkin on the back of failed negotiations with Wilder.

A deal was agreed in principle between both parties, although the terms of a rematch clause were changed at the last minute (as revealed by Wilder advisor Shelly Finkel to WBN) and ultimately killed the fight stone.

Wilder then turned his attention to Fury, and a 50-50 deal was agreed within a few days of talks getting underway.

Dates of November 10, 17, and December 1 are all now on the table for Wilder v Fury, with the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas the favored venue to host the contest over Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
