Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn has broken his silence on talks between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury for a massive heavyweight clash in 2018.

Wilder’s co-manager Shelly Finkel informed WBN this week that he hopes the fight will be confirmed next week, although Hearn is sceptical the encounter is even close.

“No (Wilder and Fury won’t fight this year),” Hearn told IFL TV. “What? When he’s just fought Sefer Seferi? And now he’s fighting ‘Andrea Pizza-netta’ (in reference to Francesco Pianeta, Fury’s opponent on Aug 18).

“Don’t be ridiculous. Listen you can be bluffed out by what you want, ‘Oh wow, yeah, let’s tune in to Fury’s next fight because if he wins this he’s going to fight Wilder (next).’”

“He won’t fight (Tony) Bellew, he won’t fight Dillian Whyte. He’s not going to fight Deontay Wilder,” added the promoter.

“I’m sure he will next year, he’ll fight everybody. But he’s got no confidence at the moment; he’s just been out of the ring for two years.

“But it’s a great story to be fair. It’s good for the hype,” concluded Hearn.

A fight with Hearn’s top man Anthony Joshua was the first choice for Wilder, who is looking to secure a big fight date on Showtime Pay-Per-View in November or December.

Talks broke off with Joshua after the Briton turned down a guaranteed $50m to face the American before sending Wilder a contract with unsignable terms, which was rejected out of hand.

Fury is now the number one target and Wilder’s advisor Finkel is hopeful something official can be released next week on the back of serious discussions with Frank Warren over the past fortnight.

“We’ve been talking to Frank Warren for around two weeks now and we’re close,” Finkel exclusively told World Boxing News.

“Everybody is working hard to get the deal done and we’re hopeful it will happen because it’s a big, big fight and one that Deontay wants. All being well, it will take place November or December in the United States.

“Tyson Fury is not afraid, maybe like Anthony Joshua was, to come over to the US and fight Deontay. So for us, it’s the biggest fight out there we can make right now.

“We wanted Joshua, and I have my own opinions as to why they don’t want to do it, but now we have the chance to make the biggest fight out there for Deontay against Tyson Fury.

“Right now, it looks real good that it will happen in November or December and we want to make it happen.

“We hope by next week Wilder v Fury will be done,” he added.
