The recent signing of middleweight Linus Udofia to Hayemaker Promotions has been the final part of a Management puzzle that cements Steve Goodwin amongst the top tier of boxing Managers today.
Originally seen as someone who can plot a fighter to Area belts, the perception of a man who has incredible success in the Financial Advisory sector has now taken a significant shift.
When the heavyweight enigma Dereck Chisora signed management terms with Goodwin Boxing, it took many by surprise. World title challenger, perennial upper echelon talent, Chisora had reached a point of seemingly treading water.
Once signed by Goodwin though, opportunities opened. A promotional deal with Matchroom, a European title shot and big fights at the O2, Chisora got back amongst the boxing headlines.
Frank Buglioni, another former world title contender, was a promotional free-agent when he put pen to paper with Steve Goodwin. Within 12 months of that move, Frank had secured a lucrative promotional deal with Matchroom and won the British title in a thrilling fight with Hosea Burton.
“Steve had been a great manager, he has taken the time to sit down with myself and team, listen to our aims and then discuss on how we can put plans in place to achieve those aims. He has also given advice along the way and guided better options were necessary” said Buglioni.
“In boxing if you have the right man for the job then things get done, this has been the case when working with Steve. I can focus on training knowing full well that Steve is looking after fight arrangements, check weights, ticket allocations, as well as providing the support needed when fighting away from home.”
Buglioni would even go as far as giving his full backing to other professional boxers that Steve Goodwin is a Manager they should be working with.
“I would certainly recommend Steve for his management service. He is loyal, trust worthy and cares about his fighters. He has always delivered on his promises and been honest throughout our time working together. A very genuine man who I look forward to continue working with.”
Having taken already established talents and helped reinvigorate their careers, in 2018 Steve was able to secure another big name Management signing in Olympian and household name, Nicola Adams. Promoted by Frank Warren and well on her way to world titles, her choice of Steve Goodwin to help her chase more gold was an endorsement of how far his name has risen within boxing circles. His ability to carve out both titles and opportunities hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Linus Udofia being picked up by Hayemaker Promotions and signed to a promotional deal was the final step Steve Goodwin wanted to take to prove his Management credentials.
With both Buglioni and Chisora, he was able to take well established fighters and boost their careers. With Nicola Adams, he is proving that he can work with the top names as they approach world titles. With Udofia, he is proving that he can organically grow talent and provide opportunities with TV platform Promoters.
Udofia was a talent who in 2016 made his professional debut under the management of Steve Goodwin on a Goodwin Boxing show at York Hall. The right fights at the right time have meant that his rise has caught the attention of the boxing public. Appearing twice on Hayemaker Promotions undercards, his flair and skillset meant that Steve Goodwin was working with a top commodity. Linus did his work in the ring, while Steve did what he is best at in meetings and on phone calls.
It is a true success story for Goodwin Boxing and a personal triumph for Steve Goodwin’s career as a boxing Manager. There have been misconceptions that there was a ceiling to where a Goodwin Boxing fighter can take their career. Over the last two years, the likes of Buglioni, Chisora, Adams and now Udofia have shown that with the right talent, mindset and attitude as a boxer, the rest can be left in Steve’s capable hands.
