Garcia defeated Brandon Rios in February to seal his place alongside Porter for the title made available due to a long-term injury suffered by Keith Thurman, although Nevada State Athletic Commission Chief Executive Bob Bennett says ‘Swift’ needs to prove his fitness before being licensed.
“Danny Garcia is currently suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Garcia must have both hands x-rayed to rule out any fractures. If positive, then he must have an orthopedic doctor clear him by August 18, 2018,” Bennett exclusively told World Boxing News.
The World Boxing Council’s order for the welterweight championship has therefore been stalled, with a provisional date of September 8th pencilled in for the fight once Garcia has the expected all-clear.

Champion Keith Thurman, who is recovering from an injury, is scheduled to return to the ring in January. Mandatory challenger Shawn Porter is scheduled to fight Adrian Granados on November 4 for the WBC Silver title.

Thurman will return in a voluntary defense in April.
