Former world champion Ricky Burns defeated Ivan Njegac when the Croatian didn’t get off his stool for the fifth round in what was a scheduled six-round contest.

It was a 50th professional outing for ‘The Rickster’ who will be hoping for a tougher test next time out after shaking off his ring rust.

Arfan Iqbal retained his English cruiserweight title with a majority draw against Simon Vallily with scores of 96-92 Vallily, 95-94 Iqbal and 94-94.

In a dirty, aggressive fight, Vallily started the fight the faster but seemed to slow down as Iqbal pushed forward. Vallily became frustrated and started to hit on the break. After several warnings, Vallily was deducted two points and risked disqualification.

Iqbal seemed to dominate the middle rounds but Vallily finished the stronger in the final round to close the curtain on an entertaining, scrappy bout.

Ricky Hatton trained Jake Haigh fought out a hard-earned points victory over Adam Jones.

Both men had their moments in the fight – landing clean blows, but it was the activity of Hatton’s charge Haigh which was enough to secure the 59-56 victory, moving to 10-0 in the process.

Local Newcastle fighter Lawrence Osueke improved to 3-0 with a routine 40-35 decision against Lithuanian journeyman Remigijus Ziausys in a four-round light heavyweight contest.

The opener saw Chad Ellis outpointed journeyman Kevin McCauley 39-37 to move to 2-0 in a very entertaining four-round bout, whilst Newcastle super lightweight Darren Reay decisively out-boxed Mwenya Chisanga to secure a 40-36 points victory in the second bout of the evening.
