The Kazakh puncher still wants 10 percent more than was originally agreed in May and promoter Tom Loeffler is hopeful a deal can be reached for September 15.
“Gennady has agreed to come off his 50-50 demand,” Loeffler told ESPN. “Gennady wants the rematch with Canelo regardless of what Oscar says. He always wanted the fight with Canelo.
“He will come down to 55-45, which makes Canelo the A side. It will be Canelo making 55 percent in a rematch against GGG, which will be much bigger than the first fight was for sure.
“The rematch with GGG is his biggest fight by far and Gennady’s biggest fight. That’s the fight we want.”
Asked about comments in the media from Oscar De La Hoya denouncing the notion of giving anyone, let alone ‘GGG’ half of a fight with Canelo, Loeffler replied: “I’m not negotiating with Oscar. I’m negotiating with Eric Gomez.
“I spoke to Eric and he’s going to go to Oscar and Canelo and see if they can get something done,” added the 360 Promotions boss.
Golovkin being linked to a fight with Billy Joe Saunders may well be enough to bring Canelo back to the table as a return clash between the pair is by far the most lucrative out there for both men.
A date and venue are already in place, leaving just contracts to be exchanged before fight fans can look forward to a second helping of one of the best battles of 2017.
