WADA approve CBD oil for athletes

The World Anti-Doping Agency, better known as the WADA, was created in 1999 to monitor the use of illegal substances which enhance athletic performance. It was created due to an initiative led by the International Olympic Committee.

The WWA monitors and tests all professional athletes for any trace of banned substances. If someone uses any of these substances, it could lead to elimination, stripping of medals or even a lifelong ban. On this long list you can find many substances, one of them being cannabis.

Since CBD is a chemical compound extracted from the cannabis plant it has been on the list for a long time even though it doesn’t have the psychoactive effects of THC.  However, after extensive research and animal studies this changed in January 2017 when the WADA officially dropped cannabidiol vaped CBD oil from its list of controlled substances and professional athletes can now use purchase CBD freely without risking their careers.

Even the food and drug administration (FDA) voted for the legalization of CBD, since some studies suggest that it could be a cure for seizures caused by Dravet syndrome. Many clinical trials of CBD have been underdone and even more are planned in hope of discovering all the benefits of CBD.

Certain professional athletes have lobbied for CBD to be taken off the list of banned substances for years. In August 2016 MMA fighter Nate Diaz vaped CBD oil in front of reporters saying that it helps with the healing process which earned him a warning from the USADA (U.S. Anti-Doping Agency). Even though he risked his career with this move, it was an important step in legalizing CBD.

Why is CBD so popular amongst athletes?

When someone takes CBD (cannabidiol) oil it interacts with their endocannabinoids system which has two receptors, CB1 and CB2 that are activated by endogenous cannabinoids. CBD could have a great impact on the human body, and in the last few years it has gained great popularity as an all-natural pain relief. There are various different ways athletes can use CBD oil, they can incorporate it into their diets, drink the oil extracts directly or use vape pens.

Many studies suggest that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties and that it could be very effective in curing post workout soreness as well as chronic pain in muscles and joints. Injuries are unfortunately inevitable in any sport and that’s why athletes are always looking for a good remedy. Since CBD oil is completely natural and non-addictive, many professional athletes have replaced their over the counter prescription medication with CBD oil, other CBD products as well as hemp oil claiming that they had little to no side effects.

Aside from being a great way to relieve pain, CBD has shown to have various health benefits, since it has therapeutic potential and could be quite beneficial for the immune system. This is also extremely important to athletes since too much physical strain could damage their immune system. It has also shown to have properties that help people calm down and reduce their anxiety, as well as keep them alert.

The removal of CBD oil from the list of banned substances was great news for professional athletes who now have a completely legal way to ease their pain, calm their nerves and achieve the best possible results.
