Murray on Saunders collapse: I’m too dangerous a fight with big money in Golovkin or Canelo

Martin Murray believes he was just too big a risk for Billy Joe Saunders to take after breaking news of the cancellation of his scheduled world title fight.

Revealing an injury to Saunders had scuppered their bout for a second time on Sunday morning, Murray says fights with Gennady Golovkin or Canelo Alvarez could be next for his British rival.

Despite his disappointment, Murray understands that Saunders couldn’t take any chances, especially with a hamstring injury which has the potential to keep him out of action longer.

“THE FIGHT IS OFF!! Billy Joe Saunders has s*** out again,” said Murray. “Gutted is an understatement but nothing I can do.

“Just want to apologise to everyone who’s bought tickets and booked hotels and thank everyone for their continued support.

“Hopefully, another training camp doesn’t go to waste and my management team can get me a fight sorted in the next couple of weeks,” he added.

Saunders can make millions from facing either Golovkin in an undisputed middleweight unification or potentially more by offering Canelo a shot at his title.

The collapse of Saunders v Murray could also have a knock-on effect for Golovkin v Canelo rematch talks as both may now begin a bidding war with the WBO champion.

Murray will now have to look elsewhere for a big fight after suffering heartbreak where a world title is concerned for the umpteenth time.
