George Groves has had a lot to deal with since booking his place in the World Boxing Super Series Final but can now focus solely on a match-up with another fellow-Briton.
Fresh from an eye-catching win over Chris Eubank Jr, Groves faces Callum Smith in the showpiece many predicted before the tournament began.
The UK stars will battle it out for the inaugural Ali Trophy, WBA ‘super’ and WBC Diamond super-middleweight belts after Groves successfully recovered from a shoulder injury in the Eubank fight to face Smith in late August or early September.
“It is nice to get a provisional date,” said Groves. “We have got something to work towards now. I have been in the gym for a while now, so when we get an exact date we can focus on.”
“We know about Smith, we have seen him for a long time and obviously I boxed his brother. We are supremely confident of getting the win and getting a good win.
“We already have some good sparring lined up, fighters similar to Smith. I am looking forward to getting back to work and winning the Ali Trophy.”
On his recovery from the injury suffered late on against Eubank Jr, Groves added: “The injury recovery has been fine, it is just like we said it would be.
“It was a dislocated shoulder that required surgery to stabilize the joint.”
Groves concluded by revealing his delight at another massive all-England collision following on from his points win over Eubank in February.
“Yeah, it is funny how these things work out. It means that you always know you will be fighting at home, well at least in the UK!
“When you both speak the same language, you can delve a little more into their psyche, find out a little more about what makes them tick and maybe get in their head a bit,” he said.
‘The Saint’ is favoured by some to have too much experience for the younger Smith, although in equal measure, ‘Mundo’ supporters see the freshness of the WBC Diamond champion being the decisive factor against Groves in the contest.
A date around September 1 – or either side of that – is expected to be confirmed in the near future by WBSS organizers Comosa AG.
