SCAR WARS: Stephen Smith’s ear versus Mason Cartwright’s lip

WBN 21/05/2018

Mason Cartwright’s horror injury suffered in defeat against Darren Tetley in Leeds invoked memories of another gruesome rip featuring another British fighter.

Back in December, Stephen Smith almost had his ear ripped off in an accidental clash of heads with former world champion Francisco Vargas at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

Photos of Smith’s ailment, as with Cartwright, have been beamed around the internet with disbelief, although it’s lucky for both boxers they are still fine to continue on in their careers.

Despite being badly banged up, Cartwright stated he’d have happily continued – even though his lip was sliced to his cheek and in dire need of medical attention.

Cartwright, 25, from Ellesmere Port, posted a video on his social media channels of the horrifically torn lip suffered during the late stoppage at Elland Road.

“If it was up to me I would have fought the 10th round all day, show my boxing ability. I’ll be back,” said Cartwright on the post.

‘Nutty’ lost for the first time in his attempt to claim the WBO European welterweight title, having been dropped in the eighth before doctors waved off the fight upon inspection of the cut in the ninth.

Cartwright later re-posted after having had stitches to mend the ailment before heading home.

Smith, himself a former two-time world title challenger, is yet to announce his return to action since his own brush with medics in America but is expected to fight over the summer as he plots a comeback to the ring.

It’s hard to say which one of the two is worse, so we’ll let you decide and call it a draw.
