Ohara Davies sets sights on Flanagan v Hooker winner, Josh Leather ahead of May 19 return

Ringside 28/04/2018

Highly-ranked super-lightweight Ohara Davies is relishing his long-awaited return to the ring at Leeds’ Elland Road on May 19.

Hackney’s Davies (16-1-KO13) has not fought since last September and having changed trainer, management and promoter in the interim, he’s confident of heralding the dawn of a new era with a vicious knockout win.

Davies, 26, said: “This all spells pure danger for whoever steps in the ring with me on May 19. They’re in for it.

“I can see the progress I’ve made in sparring. I’m sparring some of the same people I did under my old team but I’m sparring them with so much more ease now. I’ve improved loads.

“It means a lot for me to be back. I’ve been itching to fight. I had to have some time out adjusting to my new team but I know I’m in the best place with Frank Warren and MTK Global.

“They’re letting me be myself. I only engage in the occasional bit of verbal warfare now – before I was going way over the top because my team were telling me to put on an act. Now I just speak my mind and I’m at ease because I’m being myself.”

Also on the undercard of the Lee Selby v Josh Warrington show in Leeds is Davies’ MTK Global stable-mate Jack Catterall (20-0-KO11), who along with Belfast’s Tyrone McKenna (16-0-1-KO6) has been tipped as a future opponent.

Davies said: “I haven’t engaged with either of them. If Frank wants to make it happen, I don’t mind knocking them out but they’re looking up at me and I’m looking up at title-holders.

“Terry Flanagan v Maurice Hooker is a fight I’ll be keeping an eye on. I want to fight for world titles. Josh Leather has the European belt too and he’s another opponent I’m looking at.”
