Boxing Bites: Usyk / Joshua v Wilder / Cuadras / Pavlik’s Punchline / ‘2 Pound’ Forbes

RINGSIDE 19/04/2018

Oleksandr Usyk’s team reports that the WBC cruiserweight champion suffered a minor elbow injury while training for the fight against Murat Gassiev, for the final of the WORLD BOXING SUPER SERIES tournament with the Muhammad Ali Trophy at stake, so a new date is being sought.

It’s confirmed that Usyk will not be available to fight on May 11, so the final is temporarily postponed.

The promoter Comosa AG is working in partnership with Team Usyk and Team Gassiev, as well as with Sela Sport, the organizers of the event in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to establish and secure a new date. The WBC wishes champion Usyk a speedy recovery.

According to journalist Richard Damerell of SKY Sports, English promoter Eddie Hearn will meet with Deontay Wilder’s team in New York next week, to continue negotiations for The Mega Fight against Anthony Joshua.

“We made an offer last week, we have not heard from him yet. There’s been some conversation behind the scenes, and we’ll be in New York next week for the Danny Jacobs and Katie Taylor fights on Sky Sports.”

“I will seek to meet with them in New York and we will see if we can reach an agreement. We have made an offer that we feel is substantial, but we will be happy to talk about numbers and see their ideas as well.

“Anthony made it clear that the fight with Wilder is the one he wants next. There is also another option to face Alexander Povetkin, but the main objective is to make the fight against Deontay Wilder,” says Hearn.

Former world champion Carlos ‘Príncipe’ Cuadras is temporarily suspended by the World Boxing Council, due to an issue related to the WBC`s anti-doping program.
Cuadras has not tested positive for any anti-doping test before or after his recent fight with Puerto Rican McWilliams Arroyo. This issue refers to the alleged consumption of recreational substances.
During the next few days, Carlos will have a meeting with the WBC as part of the investigation.
