Exclusive: Callum Johnson explains why Callum Smith beats George Groves in WBSS Final

British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight champ Callum Johnson believes that stablemate Callum Smith will stop George Groves in the final of the WBSS.

Groves has recently declared himself fit to fight in the WBSS final if they grant his request for a month delay after recovering from the shoulder injury he picked up in his semi-final victory against Chris Eubank Jr.

If his request is granted he will face Smith who had to overcome a late replacement in his semi-final in the shape of Dutchman Nieky Holzken after Jurgen Braehmer had to withdraw through illness.

Johnson and Smith both share a trainer in Joe Gallagher, so Johnson knows first hand what ‘Mundo’ is capable of. When asked about the outcome of the bout Johnson exclusively told World Boxing News: “I see Callum winning. Groves is very good and he’s got a very good jab, but it’s a very very tough fight and I think if it goes to points it will be very close.

“But I’ve seen Callum in the gym, his size and composure will see him land within 12 and I fancy Callum to pull the stoppage off if I’m being honest.”

Smith seemingly hasn’t been at his explosive best of late, although he has done enough to see him safely through to the final and Johnson accepts ‘Mundo’ will have to be at his best to defeat Groves.

“You can’t always be at your best and sometimes you need that little bit of edge what you get from being in with a real top fighter and that little bit of fear factor if you like, it brings out the best in you.” Johnson pointed out.

“I’m very confident Callum will win that fight. Groves has got vulnerabilities and I think Callum will expose the,” said Johnson.

He also acknowledges the challenge Smith has in front of him in Groves.

“At the same time take nothing away from George it will be a very good fight and Callum will have to be at his best to win.”
