The last time Las Vegas. Nevada failed to stage a big fight in the boxing capital of the world was way back in 2008.
Oscar De La Hoya, who had made the city his home from home for the majority of his career, signed on to fight Steve Forbes at the Home Depot Center (now the StubHub Center) leaving the famous strip without a fight to promote.
Fast forward a decade and the same prospect is on the cards again despite Gennady Golovkin promising fans he would headline at the MGM Grand if they kept their flights and hotels.
‘GGG’ is set to up sticks and move to a more familiar setting, which ironically happens to be the StubHub Center in Carson, California – as De La Hoya did previously.
Those who pre-purchased packages to be present in Las Vegas during fight week are likely to be left disappointed and out-of-pocket as the fallout from the Canelo Alvarez Clenbuterol mess has a knock-on effect.
As for an opponent for Golovkin, who will hold top-billing on a card set to feature former super-flyweight king Roman Gonzalez, Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan remains the favorite ahead of IBF mandatory Sergey Derevyanchenko.
A meeting is scheduled between the WBC and IBF in order to iron out a claim by promoter Lou DiBella that Derevyanchenko should be next in line due to his number one status with the International Boxing Federation.
There’s even the possibility Golovkin could be stripped of his red belt.
Once talks have reached a satisfactory conclusion, an official announcement could be made on Golovkin’s return to Los Angeles as early as Tuesday evening.
