MTK Global has enjoyed a rapid climb to the top of the boxing. The company manage and assist the majority of Britain’s best crop of talent including the likes of Tyson Fury, Carl Frampton and Billy Joe Saunders.
One of the co-founders of MTK, Matthew Macklin, has admitted he has been amazed by the growth of MTK since forming the brand during his professional career.
Speaking exclusively to World Boxing News in London, the Brummy said: “It went from five fighters to 150 in such a short time, it just went mad.
“Boxers are like that, they see a certain trainer with success and everyone wants to fight with that trainer. Boxers are like sheep in that way, when they came with MTK, a lot of fighters were being kept busy, active and given good fight opportunities.
“I was still fighting when we had the gym in Marbella and I did a few training camps out there. It’s word of mouth, it’s an impressive gym, a great place, good weather and we then signed a few fighters.
“The guys we signed probably weren’t particularly going anywhere in their careers, but they came with us and we got them some fights. We looked after them and they got a few good wins, some big fights and it expanded like that,” he added.
Canelo Alvarez is currently facing a suspension after Clenbuterol was found in his system, placing his highly anticipated rematch with former Mackin opponent Gennady Golovkin in serious jeopardy.
Macklin, a former two-time world title challenger, cast his opinion and believes the Mexican deserves to be given a second chance.
“I don’t know enough about it and don’t want to speak ill of Canelo because he’s been such a great champion for so long and always conducted himself so well,” said Macklin.
“He’s never shied away from a drugs test so you have to give him the benefit of the doubt – he’s innocent until proven guilty.
“It would be a shame if there was any legitimacy around him taking PED’s because you’d be disgusted and two, you’d be disillusioned with it.
“I assume GGG still wants to go ahead with the fight as long as there are stricter testings in place. If he’s aware of certain meats being contaminated, then you think he’d be more diligent about it but I don’t want to jump the gun.”
The boxing manager and advisor expects WBO world champion Billy Joe Saunders to have the chance to unify the division later this year and stated the MTK fighter can cause problems to both champions.
He concluded: “Canelo and Golovkin are the two best proven middleweights out there but Billy Joe is definitely the next best and his performance against Lemieux proved how good he is. He can outbox anybody and can beat anyone on his day.
“I think Golovkin would be more wary of him but a fight between Canelo and Billy Joe would be a great fight. He’s ready for the big fight he’s craved for so long and I’m sure he’ll be next in the line to face the winner,” he added.
