Light-heavyweight “Dazzling” Darrel Church (5-2-1) took time out on fight week to speak exclusively to World Boxing News.
The 28-year-old from Chelmsford fights live on Channel 5 this Saturday on the undercard of the highly-anticipated British cruiserweight championship contest between Matty Askin (22-3-1) and Stephen Simmons (18-2) on a Hayemaker Promotions show.
Church will tackle South Londoner Rikke Askew (2-2) over four-rounds at light-heavyweight at the York Hall where the pair have already fought five times between them.
The 175-pounder sees this forthcoming fight as make or break in order to get back to Southern Area title contention, he explained all exclusively to WBN:
Will your first fight in front of the cameras bring added pressure?
“No, not at all. It can only spur me on and make me perform better.
My opponent, Rikke Askew, won last weekend, he beat a debutant and won nearly every round. Coming in off two straight wins, he’ll be confident and ambitious, which will be better for me.
It doesn’t do you no good them fights against journeyman, everyone buys a ticket and comes to watch a fight and not someone who’s not throwing anything back at you. Every fighter has always come against me and given it a go, apart from on my debut.”
What are you hoping the TV exposure will bring to your career?
“I think it will only bring more people to fights and sell more tickets. Until they see you on these big shows, people don’t quite realise what it’s all about. There’s so many boxing shows around now and some people don’t have a clue what they’re watching. It’ll get the general public interested in me, so I hope to put on a good performance.
This is it now, for me. If I can’t get past this opponent on Saturday night, then I’ll hang my gloves up! I need to get through this fight to step back up towards the Southern Area.”
You were unfortunately cut short in the ninth-round of your Southern Area light-heavyweight title eliminator against Jordan Joseph (7-2-1) with an eye injury, how soon do you want to get back to that stage again?
“I just want to get back there as soon as possible I’ll win this fight then I want the rematch with Jordan Joseph. Both Kevin [Campion] and Steve [Goodwin] know how much I want that fight.
I’m not having another four or six-rounder again, I need to fight for a title. I want to have at least three championship fights per year and I’m at a level now where I don’t want to go back down again. People are excited to see me in these title fights now.”
What’s next after this fight?
“I’ve sold the most amount of tickets ever for this fight, but, for me, it’s just about exposure.
People don’t realise this side of boxing, they look at the TV cameras and the bright lights and think I’m getting paid well, but that’s all to come; for now, it’s just getting my name out there.
I wanna’ be back out in June time. I know there’s always a big Goodwin [Promotions] show around the end of May, so I would take that if it was for a decent fight, but June would be perfect, really.
Any message for fans?
“Thanks to my fans for the support, and to my sponsors MB Surfacing, JA Contracts Landscaping and QSW Sports.
To be on a British title undercard with Olympian Joe Joyce, I’m just happy to be on something as big as this and to be able to look back on.
Going back to my unlicensed days, I never thought I’d be in the pro ranks and fighting on big bills like this.
