George Groves has asked the World Boxing Super Series to delay the final of the tournament until July.
‘The Saint’ defeated Chris Eubank Jr. last week to book his place opposite Callum Smith but suffered a shoulder injury in the last round.
With the showpiece set to take place on June 2 in London, Groves had virtually no chance of being fit and therefore hopes an extension will be granted.
“Morning boxing fans. This morning I go in for a minor operation on my injured shoulder,” Groves stated.
“The good news is I’ll be fit to fight in the final in July. We will be applying to the WBSuperSeries for a one month extension and are hopeful of securing this.”
Smith won a points decision again Nieky Holzken at the weekend to successfully secure a massive all-uk encounter with Groves and will now fight it out with the Londoner for the inaugural Muhammad Ali Trophy and WBA ssuper-middleweight title.
