On the back of Lennox Lewis and Frank Bruno questioning comments made by Deontay Wilder last week, there are plenty of fans on social media going a few steps further than that.
WBC champion Wilder was asked at last week’s Showtime Boxing ‘Up Front’ gathering whether he’d be able to defeat a 1986 version of the great Mike Tyson.
‘The Bronze Bomber’ had no hesitation in stating he’d have KO’d Tyson or anyone else for that matter, leading to a dressing down by Lewis and an agreement by Bruno – both of whom faced ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ in the ring.
Lewis said: “I just heard Deontay Wilder said he would destroy a young Mike Tyson. My thoughts are that it’s easy to talk until you actually get in the ring,” said Lewis.
“I like Wilder but he’s never been in there with someone that ferocious who truly wants to break his ribs with every punch. I don’t see it!
“I love Wilder’s confidence (and) you need that to sit atop the heavyweight division. He’s hungry and shows up in probably best shape in the division but there are levels to it and he’s still adding to his arsenal.
“My best advice to the entire crop of young heavyweight champs is to focus on being the best of YOUR era!
“Out of respect and reality. It’s unprovable. Of course, people asked but I found no need to speculate or compare myself to my idol Muhammad Ali or any other of the past greats.
“History will decide your place among the all-time greats, so go out there clean up the division and defend your title. Reign supreme and your work will speak for itself,” he added.
Bruno chipped in by saying: “Very easy to talk…easy to make a statement when you know it’s impossible to do.”
Fans have had their say, as always on social media outlets, with just a small selection of the printable ones below:
“Deontay Wilder saying he would destroy a young prime Mike Tyson. Just settle yourself down mate would you f***!’ stated one, whilst another said:
“(Wilder) thinking he’d stand a chance against an in prime Mike Tyson is laughable in itself, but to destroy him? That’s outrageous on every level. My money’s on Tyson to do Wilder and AJ (Anthony Joshua) in the same night!”
Others were clearly irate at Wilder’s claim.
“What a nail Wilder his Tyson would have taken Wilder’s head off period!”
“Wilder been sniffin glue, no one beats a young Tyson!”
“Mike Tyson, end of career would beat Wilder!”
“Deontay Wilder is ****ing CRAZY! Wouldn’t last a minute with Mike Tyson in his prime. Not one minute!”
“Deontay Wilder says he’d have knocked a young prime Mike Tyson! Funniest s*** I’ve heard in a while. I can honestly say Tyson would have crippled him inside two rounds.”
“Wait, Deontay Wilder said he’d beat a PRIME Mike Tyson? For real? Like he really meant that?”
There wasn’t many that went against those thoughts, but we managed to find one, who said: “Tyson was an undersized heavyweight who lost to all the great fighters he ever fought.
“He couldn’t deal with Wilder’s power and technique. Wilder in 4!”
