WBC clarify lightweight situation, seek mandatory conclusion
The World Boxing Council, in tradition with recent activities, have moved to clarify the current status of the lightweight division.
With a long-time mandatory outstanding, along with interim champion and diamond belts in play, the WBC are set to finalize one champion this year.
In a statement released to WBN this weekend, the WBC said the following:
Jorge Linares will be fighting Mercito Gesta this Saturday January 27th in Los Angeles, California. Mikey Garcia will fight Sergey Lipinets on March 10th.
If both fighters are victorious, the free negotiation period for the WBC mandated bout between WBC Diamond champion Jorge Linares and WBC world champion Mikey Garcia would begin on Monday, March 12th.
