In further clarification of the situation regarding the 175 pound division’s mandatory status, the WBC have released another statement.
Just hours after the world title clash between champion Adonis Stevenson and former super-middleweight ruler Badou Jack was confirmed for May 19, the WBC sanctioned an interim bout that doesn’t include the current number one contender Eleider Alvarez.
Instead, the WBC outlined the following will happen:
The WBC Board of Governors has voted in favor of the following resolution:
The WBC will sanction the WBC interim title fight between Oleksandr Gvozdyk and Mehdi Amar, on March 17th in New York.
The WBC will sanction Adonis Stevenson vs Badou Jack on May 19th.
The winners of both bouts will fight with a split percentage of WBC champion 65%, WBC interim champion 35%.
Eleider Alvarez will maintain the mandatory status to fight the winner of the champion vs interim champion.
It all means Alvarez will be forced to wait even longer for his chance, which has been on hold since 2016.
The WBC published a timeline of the light-heavyweight division earlier this month which can be found at the following link
