Mundine knocks out Browne, Opetaia moves to 14-0

WBN 17/01/2018

Midweek results from Star City Hotel & Casino, New South Wales, Australia:

Anthony Mundine claimed the Oriental middleweight championship with the World Boxing Organisation by scoring a one-punch knockout of Tommy Browne in Pyrmont.

The veteran former world title holder, returning from back-to-back losses against Charles Hatley and Danny Green, connected at the very end of the second round and the fight was all over.

Mundine can now boast a record of 48-8 with this latest triumph and moves closer towards a potential shot at Billy Joe Saunders in the future.

Prior to the win, Mundine called out Green for a possible trilogy fight as both have won one bout each of their rivalry, although Jeff Horn could also be a target if a catchweight could be agreed and the WBO welterweight ruler fails to sign on the dotted line to meet Terence Crawford.

In the co-feature, cruiserweight Jai Opetaia pushed to 14-0 with a third round stoppage of Benjamin Kelleher.

Opetaia, 22, made it eleven KO’s from those 14 wins as Kelleher suffered the first defeat of his 10-fight boxing career.

Also on the bill, lightweight Kye MacKenzie beat Emiliano Garcia in the fourth, whilst Troy O’Meley and heavyweight Richie Fa’aoso both recorded victories at Star City Hotel.
