Terry Flanagan’s bid to become a two-weight world champion has moved a step closer with the news a vacant WBO super-lightweight clash with Maurice Hooker has a date locked in.

According to initial reports, Flanagan could gain home advantage for mid-April in a clash, potentially at Manchester Arena in the North of England.

Flanagan, 28, has put together an impressive 33-0 record since turning pro and made five successful defenses of his lightweight crown before deciding to enter the 140 pound ranks.

Opponent Hooker, also 28, drew his first paid contest in 2011 before embarking on a run of victories only halted by further stalemates in 2014 and more recently against Darleys Perez in November 2016.

The pair will contest the championship left behind by Terence Crawford’s decision to vacant the belts ahead of a run at welterweight.

In other news, Andre Dirrell will rematch Jose Uzcategui in chief support to Deontay Wilder v Luis Ortiz on March 3, with the winner then number one contender for a shot at Caleb Truax.

Dirrell won a controversial disqualification in the first meeting last May and will be eyeing a win that could catapult him to clash with compatriot Truax, who shocked James DeGale at the back end of 2017.

Finally, a clash between Sullivan Barrera and Dmitry Bivol – scheduled for the same night as Wilder v Ortiz but at Madison Square Garden with the WBA light-heavyweight title on the line – has hit a snag over VADA testing.

Barrera is said to be unhappy with the drug testing agreement and wants both fighters to sign on with VADA as the build-up to their clash continues.
