The 36-year-old was on board a plane traveling from Shanghai from Beijing when Shiming suffered a suspected detached retina, according to reports in his native China.

Shiming, a double Olympic gold medallist, has been out of action since a summer loss to Sho Kimura, and media reports are now stating the prognosis “doesn’t look good” for any future fights.

“He will stay in the hospital, and things are not looking good. The check-up is still going on, but his spirit seems to be OK,” stated Sina Shanghai.

The boxer’s wife Ran Yingying wrote on social media: “I can’t sleep. I will wait until the morning and start with a different check-up. Today is the worst day for me.”

With a record of 9-2 since turning pro with Bob Arum’s Top Rank promotional outfit, Shiming was touted for massive things in the pro ranks but seemed to struggle to get to grips with the paid code despite claiming a world title.

It looks as though Shiming has fought his last bout, though, as health is more important, and the Chinese star would not get clearance to box on.
