Floyd Mayweather’s 50-0 record run, money-making list number one spot both under threat

WBN 03/11/2017

As Floyd Mayweather enjoys the fruits of his labor in yet another retirement surrounded by scantily-clad women (as posted on his Instagram recently), two of his stronghold number one positions are coming under threat.

Most recent opponent Conor McGregor has eyes on Mayweather’s top place as the biggest earner on the planet as the Irishman explained when promoting his new ‘Notorious’ movie.

“You know, I just dream of hitting that ‘billy’ (billionaire) mark, if I‘m being honest,” he said. “I‘m cruising toward that billion-dollar mark.”

On becoming the biggest sports earner on the planet, McGregor added: “Ronaldo was number one (on the Forbes list) last year, (Floyd Mayweather will certainly beat that for his efforts against the UFC star in 2017, whilst McGregor made $140m for his part in the fight), I was number 24… with $34 million in revenue.

“Next year, if it stands as is, Floyd will be number one, I’ll be number two, and Ronaldo will be number three. If I fight one or two more times I will overtake him (Mayweather).

“So that’s what my goal is right now – number one, highest-paid athlete Forbes 2018, make my way toward the billion-dollar mark, and then continue to go.”

Another record Mayweather currently hold is that of a perfect 50-0, something minimumweight ruler Wanheng Menayothin (Chayaphon Moonsri) can edge further towards later this month.

The WBC champion faces Tatsuya Fukuhara in defense of his green and gold belt on November 24, with victory set to bring his C.V to 49-0.

Granted, the Thai fighter has nowhere near the names or legacy of Mayweather, but Menayothin reaching 51-0 by 2018 will surely irk the American legend.

Continually linked to a comeback to action before finally stepping away, even for what would be a ludicrous return with McGregor, you get the feeling we may not have seen the last of the highly ambitious ‘Money’ man just yet.
