Bloody Anthony Joshua recovers from broken nose, stops sliced Carlos Takam in ten rounds

In what proved to be a durable examination for Joshua, the Brit had to grind the Frenchman down, and it was round ten when referee Phil Edwards stepped in to end the heavyweight contest.

AJ’s nose was swilled with blood following an altercation with Takam’s head during the second round, though the Brit wasn’t fazed as he began his assault on opponent who replaced Kubrat Pulev with just two weeks of notice.

Round four seemed to be the beginning of the end as Joshua, weighing in at his heaviest for a professional fight at 18 st 5lbs, connected a left hook to the temple to send Takam in disarray. However, the 36-year-old displayed a great sense of resilience, proving his determination as he carried on despite two eye’s filling up with blood.

Momentum shifted towards the middle to late rounds, Takam landed numerous shots in rounds seven and eight before AJ, wearing white and gold trunks, grinned as he summoned his prey.

The referee stepped in just as the bell rung for the beginning of round nine, with the doctor checking the condition of Takam’s eyes, with both bloodied, bruised and battered. The Londoner dislodged the stubborn competitor in round ten as Edwards stepped in to protect Takam’s safety.

In the co-feature, Dillian Whyte defeated Robert Helenius on points 119-109, 119-109 and 118-110 in what was largely a stalemate affair.

Whyte, looking to make a statement, was unable to make the big headline he had hoped to make against the Fin.

Helenius implied a repetitious of negative tactics, rarely throwing two punches around from round two onwards.

‘The Body Snatcher’ picks up the WBC silver title and moves a step closer to a showdown with America’s Deontay Wilder.

Leading up to the main event, Joe Cordina got a hero’s welcome as he stomped into the ring right before Anthony Joshua v Carlos Takam.

Returning to his hometown, the Welshman decked Jumanne Camero in the second round to receive huge cheers. Cordina cruised to a 40-35 points victory.
