Exclusive: Floyd Mayweather v Gennady Golovkin still possible at 154 pounds

With Mayweather fighting Conor McGregor at 154 pounds for his last victory, and currently being linked to a rematch, Sanchez says middleweight king ‘GGG’ can still get down to the weight in question.

“If there are serious negotiations and the package for GGG makes sense, we would make 154 for a fight against Floyd Mayweather,” Sanchez exclusively told World Boxing News.

“The only thing with that group (Mayweather and his promotional team, including Leonard Ellerbe) is there’s sometimes just talk and no substance to putting anything on the table.”

Golovkin is the new WBN Pound for Pound king since the retirement of Andre Ward, whilst Mayweather has been linked to a third career return on the back of posting training videos in the gym.

Fans would be largely disappointed should Mayweather decide to follow through with a second fight against UFC’s biggest star and opposing Golovkin for his 160 pound titles would give the American the opportunity to challenge for a sixth-weight world championship.

Even if Mayweather agrees to a stipulation of 155 pounds he’d still be sanctioned to contest Golovkin’s belts in what would be the biggest boxing match since the Manny Pacquiao record-breaker in 2015.

The McGregor offering may have just fell short of the 4.6 million PPV ‘MayPac’ buys but still earned Mayweather a guaranteed nine-figure check, which would be repeated for a Golovkin clash simultaneously broadcast on both Showtime and HBO’s paid platform.

Mayweather taking on the hard-hitting Golovkin would be the perfect way for ‘Money’ to further cement his legacy and mark him further up the ladder towards his self-professed position as ‘The Best Ever’.
