ESPN’s top boxing man Dan Rafael continues to see his feed swell on Sunday with comments regarding his views on Chris Eubank Jr’s epic stoppage of Avni Yildirim in Germany.
Eubank burst out as the tournament favorite as the Briton reached the semi-finals of the World Boxing Super Series at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart, but it was Rafael’s immediate comments following the knockout that caught the eye.
Rafael labelled the halting of the bout by referee Leszek Jankowiak as ‘putrid’ and ‘horrible’ – whilst the vast majority of those watching events unfold saw the contest called off at exactly the right time.
After taking around 15-20 head shots without reply, Yildirim was clearly in trouble before Eubank unleashed a hellacious finishing punch which almost rendered the Turk unconscious.
Badly damaged and with his head bouncing off the canvas underneath his crumpled legs, its was hard to imagine quite what Rafael saw as Eubank made a massive statement to his fellow contenders at 168 pounds.
The Brighton man moves on to an all-UK encounter in the last four against George Groves or Jamie Cox as Yildirim contemplates his first career loss and goes back to the drawing board.
Prior to the win, Brit rival Callum Smith was the favorite to lift the Ali Trophy but Eubank is now positioned at almost even money to walk away with the top prize and a clutch of title belts.
