Golovkin, Canelo pass all VADA testing measures for Sept 16

Middleweight superstars Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez completed and passed all their respective measures for the September 16 super-fight in Las Vegas.

VADA confirmed the news late on Thursday as reports of the adverse Ortiz result began to filter through.

‘The Real King Kong’ was due to challenge WBC title holder Deontay Wilder on November 4, although that fight is now in considerable jeopardy.

For ‘GGG’ and Canelo, VADA’s information gives boxing fans hope that most of the main players in the sport are complying with the rules.

Far from the testing procedures, was the actual result of the fight, which Golovkin apparently won via decision at the T-Mobile Arena only for two judges to deny the Kazakh the spoils on fight night.

Despite the dispute, Golovkin v Canelo was the best showing by a high-profile ‘boxing’ Pay-Per-View encounter since the Mayweather v Manny Pacquiao record-breaker in May 2015.

FIGURES

Figures of 1.3m were reported this week, only for Golden Boy to intervene and state they expect the bout to make ‘far north’ of that grand total.

“While everyone at Golden Boy Promotions and GGG Promotions appreciate the media’s recognition that the fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin was an enormous success, the figure that is being cited by some news outlets is simply inaccurate,” read a Golden Boy correction.

“Not only are satellite operators and cable companies still in the process of compiling data, that number does not include online PPV sales through RingTV.com, Sony Play Station, and Sling TV which far exceeded any previous fight featuring Canelo or Golovkin.

“The bottom line is that we expect the final numbers to be well north of current reports, and we will make a decision on reporting those numbers when we know they are accurate.”

A rematch between Golovkin and Canelo is eyed for May 5, 2018 provided both camps are on the same page during what are expected to be extensive negotiations.
