Trainer Dave Coldwell discusses Anthony Fowler facing Jay Byrne on Sept 30

The hard punching youngster has made a swift adaption to the paid game and is improving daily under the studious eye of Dave Coldwell and the Sheffield trainer is looking forward to his charge’s next outing so he can witness the ideas him and Fowler have been working on during what has been a tough camp thus far.

“This lad is picking up this sport so quick,” revealed Coldwell. “He obviously had a solid base and good natural attributes but it was important to get him ready for the professional game and for that he had to make improvements and do what I asked him to do.

The response from him has me a little excited and for this fight we’ve stepped up the training and that includes better sparring because I want him to know how hard this sport can be. He’s a pleasure to be around and his commitment is one of the best I’ve seen so as long as he keeps applying himself in the gym and showing me what he’s capable of then there’s no reason he can’t go far.”

In Byrne, Fowler faces a stubborn foe who has taken fellow Matchroom prospects, Josh Kelly and Felix Cash, the distance in losing efforts and Coldwell believes it’s the right fight for his boxer.

“It’s a fight that will answer questions about Anthony about his patience and stamina because he’s going to have wait for openings in this one and use his jab. There’ll be that carrot dangling in front of him trying to go for the stoppage and if it the opportunity comes then I fully expect him to exploit it but the win is the most important thing and learning from the experience is also vital.”
