He grew up in a humble environment; working from a very young age and in his spare time he trained at Muay Thai to fight in some events, so he could earn some coins to support and change the lives of his family.
Determined to get ahead, at just 13 he moved to Bangkok, where he suffered many hardships, working long hours, collecting garbage in order to survive.
One day his life took a different course, whenhe met with a boxing coach in a small gym, where he began training to become a professional. His first fights were in Japan, and although they were not victories, he did not give up.
Then he asked trainer, Thainchai Pisitwuttinan, promoter of the company Nakornloung, for the opportunity to train in his gym and prove he had what it takes, to stand out in boxing.
On May 3, 2013, he conquered the WBC world championship by defeating Yota Sato in the eighth round in what was one of the best fights of the year.
On May 31, the Mexican Carlos Cuadras dethroned Sor Rungvisai by technical decision in the eighth episode. In spite of his defeat, Srisaket did not give up and began on the long road to recover his title.
The opportunity to conquer the international market came last March. That day Sor Rungvisai defeated Roman “Chocolatito” González, dethroning him to recover the WBC super flyweight belt. The fight took place at Madison Square Garden New York. After 12 intense rounds of action, which included, dropping “Chocolatito” in the first round, with a body shot, a close and controversial decision.
Last Saturday, in a highly anticipated rematch, which didn’t disappoint, Sor Rungvisai was not the favorite to take the win. But he destroyed the odds to KO Roman in the fourth round, defending his crown and confirming that he is a magnificent champion. At that point he was up on the cards. Gonzalez got up bravely, but after another tremendous exchange, down he went again.
Sor Rungvisai is a proud and worthy WBC champion, shouldering the great responsibility he has as an example of thousands of young people in his mighty country.
