Luke Jones fights in Walsall tonight

The 23-year-old is one of eight boxers picked to be part of the exciting tournament to crown a new Midlands Area Super Featherweight Champion.

Jones, who has a W3 D1 L1 record from five fights, has been paired against Leicester’s Joe Ducker, in the first round on Sunday, 15th October at Walsall Town Hall. However, before that quarter final contest, the Chasetown pugilist steps in with Gloucester’s Harris on BCB Promotions’ ‘On The Edge’ show in the Stadium Suite this weekend.

“Being involved in the tournament is a chance I wanted to grab with both hands,” he told the Lichfield Mercury. “It’s a brilliant idea and I’m buzzing to be given the opportunity.

“Going into it, I think I will be one of the underdogs but I think that can be a good thing. I really fancy doing well.

“There’s eight of us in the tournament and I think every one of us will think we can win it.

“One of the advantages I’ve got is that I’m fighting again before the tournament so that could give me an edge in terms of sharpness.

“Andy Harris is a seasoned pro so I won’t be looking past him even though I’m excited about the tournament to come.”

With the likes of former Midlands champion Paul Holt and Manny Zaber, who boasts a 10-1 record, also in the tournament, Jones knows the standard is ultra-high.
But he believes that will bring out the best in him and he plans on going under the radar to come out on top.

“We had the press launch at the Grosvenor Casino in Walsall with all the fighters and there was quite a bit of respect between all of us.

“That was nice as sometimes with the publicity you get people being a bit cocky but I think we will all be grafting hard and the best man will win. I’ll be focussing on Joe Ducker as soon as Friday night is over. For the time being, my sole focus is Andy Harris.”

BCB Promotions’ ‘On The Edge’ show takes place on Friday, 1st September at the Banks’s Stadium. Tickets cost £35 for standard unreserved seating (£40 on the door) or £60 for VIP with buffet. Call 01922 651414/416 to book tickets for the event.
