Shocker: Carl Frampton v Andres Gutierrez off due to shower accident
World Boxing News have been informed Saturday night’s clash between Carl Frampton and Mexican Andres Gutierrez has been called off.
An official Cyclone Promotions release was handed to WBN late on Friday just hours after Frampton had failed weight by a pound losing out on a potential fight with WBC champion Gary Russell Jr.
The statement read: “Cyclone Promotions and The SSE Arena regret to announce that the “Return of The Jackal” event scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday 29th July, has been cancelled due to an accident to Andres Gutierrez.
“It is hoped that the event will be re-scheduled but ticket holders are advised to retain their tickets and contact point of purchase for further information.
“Please listen out for announcements on local radio stations or check www.ssearenabelfast.com for updates.
“We very much regret the inconvenience caused.”
The manner of the Gutierrez mishap was revealed to be a slip in the shower, with photo evidence provided.
Frampton was due to fight in Belfast for the first time since 2015 and had apologized on Friday afternoon for missing the 126 pound limit.
‘The Jackal’ had said: “After a long training camp of intense preparation and trying to make weight, I was disappointed that I came in 1lb over the featherweight limit today. I tried everything I could to cut down, but unfortunately, my body just wouldn’t allow it in the end.
“I’d like to apologise to the fans that have got involved and shown incredible support throughout this frantic fight week, and to those that will be cheering me on to victory on Saturday night.
“Furthermore, I would like to apologise to my opponent Andres Gutierrez – who will still have the opportunity to win the WBC eliminator on Saturday.
“I’m gutted, but at the same time, I acknowledge that I am responsible.
“I’m still very much looking forward to returning home tomorrow night in front of the best fans in the world.
“I am sure that I will put on an explosive performance and claim victory. Thanks again to the Jackal Army – the turnout today was unbelievable!”
A move up to 130 pounds could now be in the offing for Frampton despite the dissapointment of this week’s events.
