Hot prospect Ekow Essuman will box in the Black Country for the first time as a professional next month after being added to the card at the Venue in Dudley.
The highly-rated welterweight will step through the ropes at the high street establishment on Saturday August 5 as his paid journey gathers pace, writes Craig Birch.
The show has been titled ‘Knocked for Six,’ as Rowley Regis’ Tyler Denny and Dudley’s own Les Byfield feature over a six-round distance.
Middleweight Denny and super feather Byfield keep up their record on appearing on every pro card together going into their ninth outing, four of those coming under the Venue lights.
Brummies Kane Baker and Daryl Pearce, from Bartley Green and Rednal respectively, also occupy the home corner in the welterweight division where Essuman is well thought of.
The Botswana-born operator, who was raised in Nottingham, turned pro last December and signed a long-term deal with Hall of Fame promoter Frank Warren. He’s coached by Jimmy Gill.
It came after a notable amateur career that saw him reach the podium squad of Team GB, beating middleweight contenders Tommy Langford and Anthony Fowler along the way.
He’s been dubbed ‘the Engine’ because of his high work rate and he was late coming into the sport, having not taken up boxing competitively until he was 17.
His pro bow came in the West Midlands, outpointing Andrej Capur on a Birmingham bill. He’s since punched for pay every two months, a ratio he will keep up in Dudley.
He’s downed Kevin McCauley and Arvydas Trizno over-the-distance and stopped Casey Blair in three to come into battle with four wins from four bouts.
His TKO victory over Blair came with the BoxNation cameras rolling at the Leicester Arena on April 22. His next opponent has yet to be confirmed.
The four-round contest takes the place of Birmingham’s Raza Hamza, who withdrew from the line-up before he could be matched.
