Joshua v Ward: The Long Shot

As Andre Ward considers a move up to cruiserweight or even heavyweight, the oddsmakers have begun crunching the numbers regarding the possibilty.

The light-heavyweight and pound for pound king admitted his dream is to one day hold aloft the world crown at 200 pound plus, with HBO’s Max Kellerman namedropping Anthony Joshua into the bargain.

Although it’s likely Joshua will rematch Wladimir Klitschko next, Ward is quoted at 20/1 on Betway’s platform to share the ring with the top division in the American’s next outing.

More probable options for Ward should he take the plunge at the highest limit include Joseph Parker and ex-cruiserweight world title holder Tony Bellew, whilst a third fight with the disgruntled Sergey Kovalev is a 5/1 shot.

Unifiying the 175 pound weight class against WBC champion Adonis Stevenson is the current favourite, with fights against Canelo. Gennady Golovkin or David Haye outside options.

Betway’s Alan Alger, said: “Anthony Joshua could be the next fighter on Andre Ward’s hitlist after the American refused to rule out a scrap with the world heavyweight champion in his post-fight interview on Saturday night.

“Ward is 20/1 to jump two-weight divisions and fight AJ next, while a bout with WBC champion Adonis Stevenson or a trilogy with Sergey Kovalev looks more likely at 6/4 and 5/1 if he stays at light-heavyweight.”

Should Ward decide to go up just one class in the first instance, an immediate shot at the cruiserweight title would be a certainty for the talented ‘S.O.G’.
