Callum Smith will fight Anthony Dirrell for the vacant WBC super-middleweight title on September 9 in Los Angeles.
Smith’s trainer Joe Gallagher confirmed the news on Friday, ending weeks of speculation over when the contest would take place.
Badou Jack relinquished the title in favor of a move up to 175 pounds just as a clash with Smith loomed on the horizon.
Next in line Dirrell now steps in to face the undefeated Englishman, who was initially the favourite to win the championship.
Dirrell gaining home advantage in the United States may well be an equalizer for the ex-green and gold belt holder, who ironically lost his strap to Jack via majority decision in 2015.
For ‘Mundo’ Smith, the clash represents a chance for family redemption in the USA following previous losses for brothers Stephen, Liam and Paul to Jose Pedraza, Canelo Alvarez and pound for pound king Andre Ward respectively.
More on the encounter is due to be released in the near future.
