Warrington v Martinez: Undercard results from Leeds

WBN 13/05/2017

Results from First Direct Arena, Leeds, UK:

Thomas Patrick Ward took the British super-bantamweight title from James ‘Jazza’ Dickens on the back of just over eight rounds of enticing action.

Both fighters enjoyed good moments in the fight, although it was the challenger who put the all important close rounds in the bank.

A clash of heads in the eighth took the contest to the scorecards prematurely and it was Ward who earned a hard-fought victory.

Judges came back with cards of 87-85 (twice) and 88-84 in favour of Ward, whilst Dickens can have valid claims for a return.

In her first bout over three-minute rounds, two-time Olympic gold medallist Nicola Adams duly recorded her first stoppage since ditching the vest.

Adams pressured Maryan Salazar using her superior power and skillset until the end came in the third round.

Josh Leather picked up a fringe version of the IBF super-lightweight title and a ranking into the bargain with a sixth round stoppage of Philip Sutcliffe Jnr.

A solid series of right hands did the damage before third man Howard Foster had seen enough.

Earlier, British super-lightweight title holder Tyrone Nurse warmed up for his summer clash with Jack Catterall with an eight-round decision over Andy Keates.

Nurse claimed a 79-74 tally and is now 35-2-2 ahead of what looks a tasty match-up with undefeated Catterall at the same venue in two months’ time.

Catterall watched on before the contest was confirmed for July 15.

In a shock result, Thomas Kindon suffered defeat to Ashley Lane. Kindon, previously at 10-0, was on the wrong end of referee Howard Foster’s scorecard as the official awarded Lane a 59-55 win.

Joe Maphosa began life as a professional with a straightforward 40-36 triumph over Gary Reeve, whilst Tom Young celebrated a trio of victories by defeating Alec Bazza over the four-round distance.

Now campaigning at cruiserweight, former British champion Bob Ajisafe scored a six-round points win over Andrejs Pokumeiko on his return from injury.

The 32 year-old last fought a year ago when challenging for the IBO title at 175 pounds against Umar Salamov and can now boast a 17-3 record from his 20 bouts.

Recording their second and fifth wins respectively, Kalam Leather and Reece Mould remained undefeated on the bill. Leather out-pointed Youssef Al Hamidi, whilst Mould halted Aleksandrs Birkenbergs in the third.

In a showing of power on his part, Zak Chelli took out Chris Dutton in two rounds what was a second pro outing, whilst Ryan Garner won on points over four.
