Miguel Berchelt agrees June WBC title defense against Takashi Miura

The pair were ordered to face each other on the back of Berchelt upsetting Francisco Vargas earlier this year and the contest has now been arranged for the summer.

A WBC statement, handed to WBN this week, read as follows:

“World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaimán confirmed at the WBC weekly conference, that it was not necessary to have a purse bid for the fight between WBC super featherweight champion Miguel Berchelt and Takashi Miura, as promoters have reached an agreement and the fight is on June 24 in California.

“In this way, Miguel, who won the title last January 28 defeating Francisco Vargas in one of the most dramatic fights of the year, will fulfill the mandatory defense of his belt against the formidable Miura.”

Berchelt v Miura has all the ingredients to be yet another war under the World Boxing Council banner at 130 pounds following a succession of mighty battles.

The quartet of Berchelt, Miura, Vargas and Orlando Salido have shone in recent months and there could be plenty more to come from the warriors before all is said and done.

Vargas has already been touted to feature on the Berchelt v Miura undercard, although injuries suffered in his last fight may yet prevent that from happening.
