Golovkin v Saunders: Unification touted for June date in Kazakhstan

The 34 year-old dropped Jacobs on his way to a tight points win at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night and is now focusing on facing Billy Joe Saunders, rather than a rematch with the American who ran him close.

Saunders, who is the WBO title holder, has been teasing fans for weeks with a ‘massive fight’ in the pipeline away from home and ‘GGG’ has now confirmed his intention to land a homecoming bout in Kazakhstan this summer.

That means Golovkin and Saunders could be on a collision course for a huge match-up with five championships on the line that would see the winner crowned undisputed king of the division and in line for a battle with Canelo Alvarez in September.

Canelo has made WBC/WBO/IBO and IBF king Golovkin wait since mid-2016 for the opportunity to find out who the best fighter at 160 and below is, so beating Briton Saunders could seal any deal for the fall.

As Saunders is already on board with travelling for what will be his toughest test, Golovkin’s team at K2 should have no problems negotiating with Frank Warren.

Whispers surrounding Golovkin v Saunders had been going on for weeks prior to the Jacobs encounter but have now heightened since the champion pushed his ever-improving record to 37-0.
