Since its creation in 1986, the Carlos Slim Foundation has benefited millions of people through its social programs focused mainly on education, sports, employment, health, nutrition, social justice, culture, human development, support in natural disasters, economic development, protection and conservation of the environment; always working under the principles of social responsibility, efficiency and opportunity, with the main goal of improving the quality of life of the population of all ages through integral development.
For the Carlos Slim Foundation, it has been imperative to promote sports, since it is a fact that it provides the opportunity to foster coexistence and a healthy life away far from addictions, in addition to promoting family integration.
At this point, Carlos Slim Foundation recognizes the sport as a factor of change in society, so through the Telmex-Telcel Foundation, various programs have been implemented that promote teamwork, effort, companionship and the competitiveness.
At the WBC, we recognize the Telmex-Telcel Foundation as one of the exemplary institutions inside world boxing, as there has not been any benevolent organization in the world for our sport like this one. In 2008, one of the most important initiatives was born…. “Ring Telmex”, a program of economic support to 24 boxers, including 3 amateurs and 21 professionals, with the main goal of supporting young people to concentrate only on their physical activity, but at the same time, they are encouraged to Continue with their studies. In addition, a retirement fund was created.
Since its founding, the Telmex team, led by engineer Carlos Slim, Arturo Elías Ayub, José Aboumrad and Rogelio Herrera, has taken on the task of finding new talents by constantly monitoring the new fighters, seeking to have the best people in the team in order to give them a chance by being granted, as long as these young people are a good example in their daily lives.
Some granted fighters who have become WBC world champions are: Saúl “Canelo” Alvarez, Francisco “Bandido” Vargas, Miguel Berchelt, “Roca” Zamora, Mariana Juarez, Adrian “Confesor” Hernandez, Carlos Cuadras, Zulina Muñoz, Oscar Valdez, “Zurdo” Ramirez, among others.
One of the most valuable actions that Fundacion Telmex has done is undoubtedly granting of 27 life annuities to former world champions, including also, the coverage of all their medical expenses; a program which has not been seen anywhere else in the world.
We are deeply grateful to the engineer Don Carlos Slim who immediately joined the dream of serving the legends of yesterday of our WBC president, Dr. José Sulaimán Chagnón, a man always worried about the future of those who put in High the sport name of Mexico and later by diverse circumstances fell in the misfortune.
