Should ‘El Gallo Negro’ manage to pull off a shock in Birmingham, Alabama on February 25, Washington will be thrust straight back in with ‘The Bronze Bomber’ – scuppering any chances of a fight against the winner of Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko on April or David Haye should he come through Tony Bellew on March 4 – both in London.
“A win against Deontay Wilder would put my career on a whole other level,” Washington exclusively told World Boxing News.
“But there’s a rematch clause, so after that, I’d like to start facing some of the other champions all around the world, like Anthony Joshua, Klitschko and David Haye – guys of that sort.
“The heavyweight division is very exciting right now. We’ve also got Luis Ortiz out there and a lot of other fighters ready to make a stand. You’ve got Dillian Whyte and Dereck Chisora making noise in the UK too, those guys put on a heck of a show.
“It’s going to be fun to mix it up with everybody, as long as everybody fights everybody – the way it used to be. Just put on great boxing for the fans as in every fighter you have a new challenge.”
Asked his thoughts on the Joshua v Klitschko fight, which is set to take place in front of a 90,000 capacity crowd at Wembley Stadium, Washington replied: “It’s going to be an amazing venue for those guys to perform at and do what they love in front of all those people.
“You got the young champion trying to defend his title. I think Anthony Joshua is much like the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl. He’s going to come out strong and fast to go for the knockout, but I think if you let Wladimir Klitschko in the game for too long, he could be a lot like Tom Brady (and take the fight towards the end),” he added.
